Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Mental health problems are REAL and statistics show they will affect one in four of us at some point in our lives.

Talking to a third party in a confidential and non-judgmental setting may be just what you need to try and break the cycle.

At Allerton Health Centre we have a new member to our team; Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist Helen Greenland. Helen will be offering an evidenced based talking therapy – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This is widely recommended by the NHS to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in adults, young people and children.

What is CBT?

CBT is a talking therapy which focuses on understanding a client's difficulties in more detail. It is based on the idea that the way you think affects the way you feel and behave. It is very much to do with an individual’s perception and view of experiences and situations.

The main purpose of CBT is to help to identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns, assumptions, beliefs and behaviours.

CBT Really Works!

There is a great deal of evidence to show that CBT works effectively in treating a range of problems including depression and anxiety. This research has been carefully reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

What can CBT help with?

NICE recommends CBT in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Anxiety Disorders (including Panic Attacks and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

  • Phobias

  • Depression

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

  • There is also strong evidence showing that CBT is helpful in treating many other conditions, including:

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Behavioural Difficulties in children

  • Anxiety Disorders in children

  • Stress

  • Chronic Pain

  • Physical Symptoms without a medical diagnosis

  • Sleep Difficulties

  • Anger Management.
