How to help keep your house clean and free of viruses this winter.

The winter time often brings an abundance of bugs. Recently I went back to my basics to help my little one strengthen his immune system so that he could fight off those never-ending colds from nursery. And boy did it work! Here are some of the things we have done.

Place a small bowl on your radiator and fill with 2 tablespoons of water. Put 6-10 drops of essential oil in to the bowl. The heat from the radiator will cause the water to evaporate with molecules of the essential oils in. Inhaling the essential oils allows them to enter our respiratory system and stimulate our immune system; thus helping us fight off those cold and coughs. Alternatively you can add 6-10 drops of your chosen oils (for adults only), in 30 ml of vegetable oil or milk, and add to a warm bath, or massage on to the body. Good areas for massage are the soles of the feet, the chest, back and behind the ears.

Oils to choose:

Lavender; a natural antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral agent. It is also great for relaxation and stimulating the immune system.

Tea tree; one of the most popular anti viral and antiseptic essential oils. It is a natural antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral agent.

Rosemary; a long history of healthcare associated usage due to its natural antibacterial properties.

Eucalyptus; a natural antiviral and antibacterial agent.  It is a good decongestant and stimulant of the immune system. (Not to be used in under 2 year olds)

Pine; a good decongestant, antiseptic and antibacterial agent. Drops can be added to your mop bucket to be used throughout your house!

Chamomile; soothing and calming to aid relaxation.

Frankincense; an antispasmodic to calm coughs. A great addition to a relaxation blend.

Tips for buying essential oils. Don’t be confused by other terms such as ‘fragrance' oils. Essential oils specifically contain the primary plant extract and no other ingredient. Typically essential oils are a little more expensive than fragrance oils and will normally be found in specialist natural health outlets.
